AESSEAL plc has donated £400,000 to Laptops for Kids - enough funding to supply connectivity to every disadvantaged child in South Yorkshire and kickstart the campaign in its home town of Rotherham.

The roof is not the limit

The solar panels on the roof of AESSEAL’s Mill Close factory in Rotherham are just one of the more visible results of the group’s pledge to spend £29 million by 2029 on environmentally friendly investments.

A new variable speed 55kW Atlas Copco compressor was installed at the Mill Close site. As the machine is more efficient than the equipment it replace and it can respond to fluctuating demand significant savings were achieved. Following this success further similar systems were installed at Bradford and Derby. Saving a further 24,000kWh per year with a 3 year return.

Recently installed uninterruptable power source (UPS) system protects the site from power disruption. Significantly more efficient compared to alternative technologies considered. The system also stores significant amounts of energy allowing the site to reduce demand on the grid during peak times. It can also offer balancing services to the grid should there be changes in frequency or voltage. These services attract grid incentives allowing returns to be made.

Major investment in US manufacturing division

This is enhanced by the continued investment technology that increase operational and facility efficiency. Examples include computerised building management systems to control the heating and ventilation systems, voltage optimisation, LED lighting and high efficiency compressors have resulted in significant savings. By 2019 electricity consumption as a ratio to sales turnover reduced by 35%, while gas consumption as a ratio to degree days as a normalising factor to take account of fluctuations in external temperature reduced by 29% both against a baseline year of 2008.


94% Waste Diverted from Landfill

The ability to reduce waste through adoption of the waste principles of the ‘waste hierarchy’, reduce, reuse, and recycle has ensured both impacts and costs have been kept manageable throughout the sustained growth of the business.

Major waste streams including metal, cardboard, paper and even some forms of plastic are segregated for recycling. Even the majority of general waste produced at the Company head offices in Rotherham is diverted from landfill by use of incineration at a CHP plant in Sheffield. Dedicated waste segregation and storage areas have been developed at operational sites to assist with such activities. As a result, significant improvements have been made in the amount of waste disposed to landfill. When taken as a ratio against turnover by 2018 waste sent to landfill had reduced by 45% compared to the baseline year of 2008. As a result, significant improvements have been made in the amount of waste disposed to landfill. During 2019 over 94% of all waste produced was diverted from landfill due to the levels of recycling and recovery. Every effort is made to further reduce waste at source by decreasing it at source or through reuse. A programme started during 2019 involved the sending of good quality pallets out for reuse, thus avoiding almost 20 tonnes of wood becoming waste.


Conservation

At the Company’s Global Technology Centre in Rotherham, AES Engineering created ‘The Wetlands Sanctuary’. As well as providing a habitat for wildlife, the development features a Sustainable Urban Drainage System to reduce any impacts of the development on the local rivers Don and Rother allowing nature to provide vital eco-services.

The site also features, meadow, woodland and living roof habitats, which form a wildlife corridor within a predominantly industrial area. This has allowed a diversity of flora and fauna to thrive with the site regularly visited by lapwings, kestrels, mallards, herons, foxes, and stotes, along with an array of insect and invertebrate species.

“Smartphone” initiative for Rotherham’s asylum-seekers

AESSEAL is partnering with the Mears Foundation to help asylum-seekers, temporarily housed in Rotherham, to communicate with their families and support groups.

The two organisations are funding the purchase of more than 800 smartphones in an initiative that recognises the social and emotional needs for connectivity of a group that has in most cases experienced extreme hardship during their journey to the UK.

Every effort is made to further reduce waste at source by decreasing it at source or through reuse. A programme started during 2019 involved the sending of good quality pallets out for reuse, thus avoiding almost 20 tonnes of wood becoming waste.
